Happy International Women's Day from AACE! Let's take a moment to remember AACE's first female member, Elsie Eaves.
She attended the second annual meeting in 1957, not as a member, but as an "interested observer". She joined AACE 1961, just two short years before her retirement.
Elsie was a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder. She started her professional career as a draftsman for the Colorado State Highway Department. She worked for the U.S. Bureau of Public Records and the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad.
In 1926, she began working on the statistical analysis for publications giant McGraw-Hill. In 1927, she became the first female member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). When she joined AACE in 1961, she was the Managing Editor of the Business News Department of McGraw-Hill publications, producing Construction Daily, Construction Methods and Equipment, and Engineering News-Record.
