Technical Program:

Determining Activity Durations in the Construction Schedule

Abstract:

AACE International Recommended Practice No. 32R-04, Determining Activity Durations, is an introduction to the topics necessary for this stage of the schedule development process. In this presentation, Dr. Mubarak expands on those topics from a Construction Schedule perspective, including areas that were not covered in the RP. These topics include: the impact of resources on activity durations, the relationship between the cost estimate and the schedule, and establishing allowances for time contingency. His review of the methods used to establish activity durations for construction schedules will address the following questions:

·       Who should determine the durations?

·       What is the owner’s responsibility?

·       Where does one find sources for production rates?

·       How important is duration accuracy?

·       Should risk management techniques influence the process?
